Rockwood Approves 18 Air Conditioning Upgrades for School Buses

Students riding Rockwood School District buses could have a more comfortable commute next spring following a recently approved transportation improvement.

At its September 29 meeting, the Rockwood Board of Education approved the purchase of 18 air conditioning retrofit kits for district-owned school buses.

The purchase is intended to close a gap in the district's current fleet and eventually provide air conditioning on every general education route bus.

According to Rockwood's October 19 announcement, the district currently owns 128 buses and uses 98 buses on regular routes. Ten of those route buses currently lack air conditioning.

Once the new equipment is installed, the district expects 106 buses to be equipped with air conditioning, including additional vehicles that can serve as backups.

Rather than sending all the buses to an outside installation facility, Rockwood plans to have its own mechanics complete most of the work. A vendor will assist with the first installation and train district mechanics to handle the remaining units.

The purchase will be funded through the Transportation Department's capital fund.

Rockwood Director of Transportation Dr. Scott Speer said the district hopes to complete the installations before the spring air conditioning season begins.

For Chesterfield-area families served by Rockwood, the upgrades address a practical concern during warmer school days, particularly in late spring and early fall.

The purchase has been approved, but the installations are not yet complete. The district has not announced a guaranteed completion date.

What parents should know: Rockwood's target is spring 2027. Families should continue using existing transportation channels for questions about their assigned routes.

BOOterfly House Brings Halloween's Creepy Creatures to Chesterfield

Halloween isn't just about ghosts and pumpkins at Chesterfield's Sophia M. Sachs Butterfly House this October.

Throughout the month, the popular Faust Park attraction is hosting its annual BOOterfly House experience, inviting families to explore creatures that are often misunderstood or feared.

Instead of traditional haunted-house scares, the event takes an educational approach to Halloween by introducing visitors to insects, arachnids and unusual plants.

Guests can observe tarantulas, scorpions, cockroaches, beetles and other creatures while learning about the important roles these animals play in nature.

The experience also features carnivorous plants in the Tropical Conservatory and opportunities to spot the striking Owl Butterfly among the tropical foliage.

The Missouri Botanical Garden, which operates the Butterfly House, has also scheduled additional weekend programming during October.

Animal Encounters are planned on Saturdays and Sundays from 1 to 2 p.m., giving visitors opportunities to learn more about the creatures housed at the attraction.

On Sundays from 11 to 11:30 a.m., the Carnivorous Plant Outpost offers a closer look at the unusual plants in the collection.

These activities are included with regular Butterfly House admission.

For Chesterfield families, BOOterfly House provides an indoor seasonal outing that combines Halloween excitement with science and nature education.

The event runs through October 31, with advertised hours of 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 15050 Faust Park in Chesterfield.

Admission is included for Missouri Botanical Garden members, while nonmembers pay regular Butterfly House admission.

What families should know: BOOterfly House is already underway. The remaining weekend programs are scheduled, so check the attraction's calendar before visiting.
