❄️🚜 Snowplows in 94-Degree Weather? MoDOT Gears Up for Winter Across St. Louis! ☀️🌨️

Snowplows in October? With temperatures soaring into the 90s? You read that right!
Drivers across the St. Louis area may have spotted an unusual sight on local highways this week as the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) conducted its annual Winter Operations Drill on October 13–14, 2026.
Despite Tuesday's forecast high of 94 degrees, MoDOT crews were preparing for something much colder: Missouri's unpredictable winter weather!
🚜 Why Were Snowplows on the Roads?
The annual drill helps MoDOT prepare its equipment, employees, and emergency response systems before the first major winter storm arrives.
During the two-day exercise, crews were scheduled to:
❄️ Test Snowplow Equipment: Check that vehicles and winter maintenance equipment are ready for action.
🛣️ Practice Snow Routes: Drive assigned routes along Missouri highways and state roads.
🚨 Activate Emergency Operations Centers: Practice coordinating responses to winter weather emergencies.
📡 Test Communication Systems: Make sure crews can communicate effectively when severe weather strikes.
The exercises were scheduled to begin at 9 a.m., with snowplows traveling highways and state routes throughout the St. Louis region.
🌨️ Preparing Today for Safer Roads Tomorrow!
While the sight of snowplows rolling through summer-like temperatures might seem strange, the preparation serves an important purpose: helping crews respond efficiently when snow and ice make driving dangerous.
MoDOT's goal is to have its winter operations ready so crews can clear roadways and help motorists travel safely following winter storms.
💙 A big thank-you to the MoDOT crews working behind the scenes to keep Missouri roads safe this winter!
So if you spotted a snowplow under the blazing October sun, don't worry—winter hasn't arrived early. MoDOT was simply getting ready for when it does!
